SPECIAL FRIEND MENTOR

Special Friends of progress Ranch act as a mentor, providing a youngster with exposure to community activities, positive role modeling and normal family life. After an orientation to the program, the expectation of a Special Friend is to share some time with the assigned child.

It is the goal that by providing this experience a child will learn to see other role models and families in the community, and learn from them as well as the observed interactions. This may be planned by the Special Friend by spending time visiting, playing a table game, talking or going for a walk to attend a recreational activity or a community event.

It is important that the Special Friend refrain from exposing the child to violence, substance or alcohol use and materialism. Most of the boys have been traumatized in the past and become highly manipulative for materialism, favors and promises. Special Friends must also respect the rules of the program at the home center, even though it may place restrictions upon your contact.
