LITERACY TUTOR

Literacy tutors are needed at 2 homes in Davis. Progress Ranch houses boys from 7-12 years of age from 12-36 months. The boys need intensive, one to one, reading remediation in order to bring them up to grade level. It will require a commitment in consistency and duration.

  1. REQUIREMENTS
  1. Community volunteer OR UCD Work Study students;
  2. Good moral character, reliable, mature and conscientious;
  3. Able to communicate in English verbally and in writing, and able to be a team player;
  4. Pass fingerprinting requirements;
  5. Have a physical and TB clearance within a year;
  6. Attend orientation and ongoing trainings;
  7. Cooperate with house staff and agency’s program; and
  8. Have the dedication and patience to educate and help children.
  1. DUTIES
  1. Must have knowledge or the ability to assess the reading ability of the youngsters;
  2. Provide 3-5 hours of intensive 1-1 tutoring in reading per week to one of the residents, to be arranged according to the child’s schedule;
  3. Develop a curriculum that meets the individual needs of the child;
  4. Pursue and read up on the youngster and his academic abilities, contacting the teacher if necessary for assessment and needs, but not having the teacher directing the curriculum;
  5. Be engaged by communicating directly with the resident, making no promises, bringing no gifts or food items unless authorized;
  6. And, provide input and evaluation of the child and your experience at the end of the tutor’s commitment.
  7. Do not participate in homework unless it requires reading.
  1. WORK WEEK AND PAY PERIODS
  1. For Work Study students, pay periods are established by the Work Study calendar. This position pays $/hour for tutoring and training.
  2. Internship credit is available;
  3. Volunteers are gladly accepted.
